If you are planning an event open to the public and wish to sell or serve alcohol, you will need to apply for and obtain a Special Occasion Permit (SOP). Applications for SOPs are available at LCBO stores or on the AGCO’s website at www.agco.on.ca

Important: As a permit holder, you are personally responsible to ensure that alcohol is sold and served responsibly and according to the law.

In Ontario, an SOP is required whenever alcohol is sold or served anywhere other than in a house or a licensed establishment. Special Occasions requiring permits may include:

  • Weddings, Stag & Does
  • Corporate parties
  • Fundraisers
  • Charity events

As an event organizer you are responsible for your guests’ safety and sobriety. If your guests become intoxicated, you’re responsible until they sober up, not just until they leave your event. It is important to know you may be held responsible for injuries or damages that occur as a result of the alcohol you provide.

A “stag and doe” cannot be used to raise funds through the sale of alcohol. These event types are limited to invited guests only and cannot be advertised to the public. No profit can be made directly or indirectly from the sale of alcohol. The permit holder may raise funds through ticket sales and an admission charge to attend the event, but not from the sale of alcohol. The AGCO is enforcing the rules with Licensees and SOP’s regarding no advertising, no profits from liquor sales, no selling tickets at the door, and no games of chance. We as a licensee cannot allow games of chance (ie. Raffles or door prizes within this licensed venue).

Please remember that if you take out a special event permit, no matter what kind it is, you as the permit holder are responsible for what happens. AGCO inspectors are obligated to respond if a complaint is received regarding an establishment or permit holder, and can shut down the event if they see it as necessary.
